Anschutz 1517 Rifle in 17 HRM Review

Anschutz 1517 Rifle in 17 HRM
Anschutz 1517 Rifle in 17 HRM

The Anschutz 1517 Rifle in 17 HRM is a fantastic rimfire rifle. Anschutz, like many other companies, has started chambering their rimfire rifles in the hot new .17 Hornady Rimfire Magnum (HRM).  The Anschutz 1700 series and 1500 series rifles are both chambered for the .17 HRM , and I selected the Anschutz 1517D HB with classic stock and heavy barrel. The barrel is not a bull barrel, but the non-tapered barrel is heavier than the normal tube on a rimfire rifle.  The classic stock has cut checkering and a little figure in the wood, and the barrel is free floated. The rifle has a 5-shot magazine,  metal is bright blue, and overall, a very attractive rifle.  The 1517 uses the Anschutz Match 64 action that has probably accounted for more Olympic gold metals than any other.  It is manufactured in Ulm, Germany and has an importation center located within the United States of America.  This is not a partnership with any other existing company, but rather a new extension of the parent company; J.G. ANSCHÜTZ GmbH & Co.KG, in Germany.  Anchutz North America located in the newly renovated GSI (Gun South Inc.) building in Trussville, Alabama.

The street price for the 1517 runs about $850-950.   For more information and specifics see the Anschutz North America website.

When the rifle arrived, the trigger was not heavy, but had a lot of slack and creep, which I can not tolerate. I don’t mind a heavy trigger as long as it breaks cleanly. Fortunately the 1517 comes with a trigger that is adjustable for weight and creep. The weight of pull was fine at about 2.5 pounds, but can be adjusted, somewhat,  via a screw in front of the trigger.  The creep can be reduced using the adjustment screw on the side of the trigger. For safety purposes, don’t do this yourself, take the rifle to a competent gunsmith. My gunsmith did the adjustment to eliminate the slack and creep in about 5 minutes while I waited. The over travel of the trigger can not be adjusted.

I matched the Anschutz 1517 up with a Leupold VXII 4x12AO scope with Duplex reticle for first test. ( Now she wears a Leupold 4.5×14 Tactical).  Our initial testing was done at 50 yards.  The Anschutz showed a strong potential with the first few 5-shot groups averaging a half inch. Most of the 5-shot groups were one hole groups. The action on the new 1517 is a little stiff.  This was the first of these rifles I have shot, so I don’t know if this is typical. I suspect it will smooth up with use.  The 4-round magazine feeds ammo almost straight into the chamber and does not put any pressure on the bullet as it feeds from mag to chamber.  The trigger, after the adjustment discussed above, is great and, overall, the I must say this rifle is a real winner.  Do to recent eye surgery, I was not able to see the 100 yard target well enough to shoot record groups, but I will be back to do 100 yard testing in a few days. I am sure the rifle will shoot under one MOA.

The .17 HRM shoots so flat that the tiny poly tipped bullet is no more than a half inch above or below the line of sight from 25 to 125 yards. (See chart below). I can’t wait to try it out on small game, and if it is legal in your state to hunt turkeys with a rifle, the .17HRM should be just the ticket.  A .17HRM bullet hitting a gobbler in the body should not exit. It will just cause devastation to the inside and do minimum damage to the meat.
