Lyman Case Trim Express Review (Video)

Lyman and frankford arsenal case prep tools

This review of the Lyman Case Trim Express and the Frankford Arsenal Case Prep Center is brought to you by The Old Deer Hunters. Lets take a look at the Lyman Case Trim Express and the Frankford Arsenal Case Prep Center to see how they can speed up the process of ammo case preparation and make you a better reloader.

The Lyman Case Trim Express Review and Frankford Arsenal Case Prep Center are very easy to use and same me lots of time. I usually clean and resize the brass before trimming because brass tends to stretch during resizing. Both are basically fool proof.

The trimmer uses caliber specific bushings to align the case as you trim them. You install the proper bushing, and set the trim length using the screw adjustment on the trimmer. After the proper length is set, just push the case into the bushing and let the trimmer do the work to time the mouth of the case to proper length.

The video shows you how to set up the trimmer and I do a demonstration of how to trim, debur rifle cases and clean primer pockets with the Lyman Case Trim Express and the Frankford Arsenal Case Prep Center.

Lyman & Frankford Arsenal Case Prep Tools Video Transcript

Hey everybody, welcome back to the Old Deer Hunters. Today, I wanted to show you a couple of new tools I picked up that make case preparation a lot easier.

The first tool I want to tell you about is the Frankford Arsenal Platinum Case Prep Center from their Platinum Series. It works very well, and I’ll give you a demo in just a second. The second tool I want to show you is Lyman’s Case Trim Xpress (lyman case prep xpress).

This new case trimmer makes trimming cases a lot easier and a lot faster. The Case Trim Xpress comes with a set of bushings for different calibers, so you may have a bushing for .223, .243, or a magnum case. The bushings fit right in the end. You insert the bushing, put the cap on, and adjust it within 1/1000 of an inch as you turn the dial to get just the proper amount of brass trimmed off the end. It’s got a variable speed, so you can run it slow or fast.

I like to run it on the fastest speed; it seems like it trims a little better and smoother. All you have to do after you get your case length set by trial and error is to run it in and push it against that little circular spring, just enough to take off the taste.

Now, this case is pretty much already set; it did take off just a little bit, so it turned it off nice and smooth, no burrs. Now, we’ll run this through our case prep center, but pretty much it really does a good job of trimming that brass, and it’s quick and easy after you get the correct case length set that you want to trim to; every one of them is the same.

It’s quick and easy, and for hunters, that’s what we want. I’ve removed that rubber pad that I had under there, and it’s got rubber feet on it to keep it from sliding on the surface, so that helps, or it has holes where you can actually mount it to a board. When I do these (trim cases), I always resize my brass before I trim it because usually during resizing operations is when your case is going to grow and stretch. After you resize, trim it, and then our next step we’re going to go to is to use the Fulton Armory case prep center to do the inside burr, the outside burr, and clean the primer pocket.

Okay, the next piece of gear I want to show you is the new Frankfurt Arsenal Case Prep Center. This is from their Platinum series, so let’s take a look at it.

The Case Prep Center comes with four tools: large and small primer pocket cleaner tools, as well as inside and outside case mouth deburring tool. No other tools  It has an on/off switch, so you can leave it plugged into your bench if you have room.

All the tools of the prep station run at one speed for brass prep; they’re not adjustable, but they seem to be just about spot on to do the operations they’re intended to do. All four of these tools come with the case trimmer at no extra charge. After the case has been resized, the primer has been punched out, and we’ve trimmed it to length using the Lyman Trim Express, then we just take the case, in this case, it’s a .243 Winchester (shouldered case), it has a large primer pocket, so we just use the large primer pocket cleaner.

A little inside, a little outside, deburring; quite a great job this does. Reverse it inside and outside, nice, clean, and shiny primer pocket, and it’s ready to load. Let’s do a couple more cases; see how easy that is? Just one, two, three operation, great results.

You can use the Case Prep Center a couple of different ways; I’m usually standing at my bench, so I usually just set it up straight up. It’s got rubber feet on it around all four corners, so it doesn’t slip; it’s pretty heavy. So, you can do those standing up or, if you prefer to sit at your bench, you can also use it on its side.

The Frankfurt Arsenal Case Prep Center works great either way; I highly recommend it, and it’s about 100 bucks on Amazon. So, for about a hundred dollars, you can save yourself a lot of time. If you have any questions about either one of these two tools, either the Lyman Trim Express or the Frankfurt Arsenal Case Prep Center, please just drop me a note in the comments; I’ll be happy to try to answer any of your questions.

I always like to interact with viewers out there; please drop me a comment. And, by the way, if you’ve made it this far, please subscribe to our channel; we’re getting close to 1500 subscribers and would like to make it to 2000 by the end of the year, so we appreciate your support. Come back and see the Old Deer Hunters and have a good day.

Additional Information

Both of these tools makes reloading easier.  The primer pocket tools are easy to use, the assistive technology makes reloading more fun.  It is much easier to use than my old Forster case trimmer. The hi-speed cutter is smooth and quick.  It works similarly to the hornady case prep trio, lyman case prep center and the RCBS case prep center.  It includes a VLD inside chamfering tool, outside chamfering tool at no extra cost.

The trimmer does not use an adjustable collet system but uses case shoulder stop collets to set cutting length to the exact desired length.  It can be used for rifle brass or pistol brass. Other extra tools that aid the process of brass prep are small primer pocket crimp removers,  Lee case length gauges, loading trays, hand priming tool, frankford arsenal’s case trim & prep tools, cartridge case holders, a storage box, and other separate tools.
