Ruger 1022 Replacement Triggers & Gunsmithing
Ruger 1022 factory triggers work well but the trigger pull is HEAVY! Heavy triggers lead to poor accuracy because no matter how accurate the barrel, a heavy operator interface makes it almost impossible to shoot well. We have found several sources for custom triggers or trigger gunsmithing jobs that seem very reasonable. So far we have personally tested the Kidd trigger job kit and the Ruger BX trigger group.
Brimstone Gunsmithing
The Tier 3 Trigger Job ($38.50) – An entry level value to have your trigger group improved. This is not a full tilt competition trigger, but this trigger will feel better than the new Ruger BX triggers that cost $90. The most important thing is that Brimstone re-works every part of the trigger in some way, which improves every aspect of the trigger motion.
If you want more of a competition trigger, the Tier 2($78.50) gives you all the above, a machined CNC trigger, and allow the instillation of an internal, torsion-type, trigger return spring mounted on the trigger itself. This torsion spring system has no moving or sliding parts (unlike the factory plunger) which allows them to get the take up and the reset silky smooth. The hole for the original trigger return spring is then drilled out, tapped, and an overtravel stop is installed in that hole. Pull weight is about 2-2.5 lbs.
Tier 1 ($110) gets you all the above, adjustable sear and everything polished and hand fitted.
Kidd Trigger Kit
I have a KIDD “Trigger Job” Kit with Hammer, Sear, Disconnect, and Trigger blade ($105) in one of my 1022’s and it is great. Easy to install and it gives you a great trigger with about a 2.5 lbs pull. Tony Kidd has a easy to follow instruction video for the Do-it-Yourselfer. They also has full drop-in match triggers we will cover later.
Volquartsen HP Action Kit for 10/22
The Volquartsen kit ($131) consists a Volquartsen target hammer (includes shims and bushings), hammer spring, target disconnector, target sear and target trigger Includes polished plunger and spring) with overtravel adjustment. Also included is a recoil buffer to reduce wear on the action and bolt. The HP Action Kit will give the shooter one of the most crisp, clean trigger pulls available. Reduces trigger pull down to approximately 2.25 – 2.5lbs. HP Action Kit Plus features all of this and adds our Extended Magazine Release and Auto Bolt Release for $153.
Ruger BX Trigger Group
The Ruger BX Trigger Group ($80) is Ruger’s own answer to to the crappy standard 1022 trigger. My brother says they work quite well, and skips everything in between the BX and a complete Kidd Drop-in Group. Brings pull of trigger down to about 3lbs.
Trivette’s Gunsmithing
Trivette’s WORX Trigger Job ($68) – Complete trigger rework in which case they take your factory trigger group and preform the worx trigger job which will take your pull to a light 2 pound 4 ounces or anywhere in between you want. Trigger group is ultrasonically cleaned upon receipt and inspected. Hammer and sear is honed in custom made fixtures so they are right every time. The factory bolt stop is milled to make it an auto release, over travel screw installed in the trigger, reassembled, bench tested, field tested, and teflon lubricate all moving parts. Cost of trigger worx is $67.99 + $8.50 return shipping. Upgraded magazine releases installed for current cost. They can adjust the older aluminum or the new polymer group, and try to keep polymer groups in stock. Bolt work is also done on 1022’s. Call for quote. (828)310-2007.

Level I Trigger/Action $50 Includes all Parts and Labor*
They add a precision ground Power Custom hammer to result in reduced trigger pull. An extra power hammer spring and hammer shims are also included. The hammer is shimmed as necessary to hold it in proper alignment. The Level I Action Job produces a lighter trigger pull with a faster lock time. Nominal trigger pull is greatly reduced, but there will be some creep and take-up in the trigger pull. This is the trigger job I recommend for a factory 10/22 that you plan to use for hunting.
Level II Trigger/Action with Adjustable Sea$70 Includes all Parts and Labor*They replace the sear with our adjustable version. The trigger is modified with a small hole that allows adjustment of the engagement with the disconnector without having to remove the trigger group from the gun. Trigger take-up and creep can be virtually eliminated. An extra power hammer spring is included. The new sear, the disconnector and the hammer are shimmed as necessary to hold them in proper alignment. The sear to hammer engagements are precision honed and polished. The Level II Action Job produces a trigger pull with minimal take-up and creep.
Nominal trigger pull will have almost no take-up. This is the trigger job I recommend for general hunting, plinking and target shooting.
Level III Super Match Trigger Job $95 Includes all Parts and Labor*
They replace the hammer with our custom ground and lightened hammer. The sear is replaced with their version featuring an adjustable engagement to eliminate trigger creep and take-up. The trigger is drilled with an sear adjustment opening allowing adjustment without removing the trigger, and a nylon-tipped overtravel screw is installed in place of the factory trigger return spring and plunger. The trigger return system is modified with our internal torsion spring system that nearly eliminates friction and extra pressure against the trigger. All the engagements are polished and shims are installed to eliminate lateral play. The springs are replaced and tuned for optimum resistance. The result is a crisp and clean trigger pull that is extremely consistent, with no take-up or overtravel. The Level III Action Job is top of the line, and produces the lightest possible trigger pull with the fastest lock time.
Nominal trigger pull is 2 to 2-1/2# with minimal creep or take-up. This is a top-of-the-line premium trigger job.
