This Rocky Men’s Waterproof Hunting Boots Review for Rocky Snake Boots, Outback Hiking and Insulated Boots actually began back in the late 1980’s with my first pair of Rocky Cornstalker Boots. I was sitting on a cold deer stand in December in a pair of “insulated” rubber boots and my feet were freezing cold. I silently swore to myself that I was going to buy some warm boots that very day.
I climbed down from that stand, drove to Kettle Creek Arms in Washington, Georgia and bought a pair of Rocky waterproof, insulated Cornstalker boots. The rest is history and I have been wearing Rocky Boots ever since.
Rocky has come a long way since that time and makes many different types of boots. Currently I have three pairs of Rocky Boots; the Snake Boots, the Outback Hiking Boots and the Rocky Insulated waterproof boots.
Rocky Waterproof Snake Boot
Rocky Snake Boots going strong after 3 seasons
After I retired from the Army, I moved to Georgia and found that even though I was not in the Wild West, there were plenty Rattle Snakes and Copperheads in my hunting area. Naturally I turned to Rocky for a pair of their 16″ snake proof boots.
One of the reasons I need these Rocky snake proof boots more than the average hunter is because we hunt a lot at night. We work with farmers and land managers to reduce the growing coyote and feral hog population in Georgia. When I am hunting with thermal optics in the dark of night, there is no way to see venomous snakes before I get too close.
Rattlesnakes come out at night. In fact, because of their heat sensing organs, they can see just as well at night as they can during the day. Rattlesnakes may come out at night for a variety of reasons, but the bottom line is that they hunt whenever, and wherever, the opportunities are best. My Rocky’s really put my mind at ease on those dark summer nights so I can concentrate on the hunt.
Since I was going to be wearing these boots for about 8-9 months of the year, I needed a comfortable boot almost as much as protection from poisonous snakes. Additionally I wanted all my boots to be waterproof. Over the years, Rocky has upgraded and added several styles of snake boots. I am currently wearing the the all Cordura Low Country Snake boot, but today that style has been upgraded by adding a rubber toe and heel cap for more durability, and a side zipper for easy off and on. The newest Rocky snake boot is called the Rocky Lynx Waterproof Snake Boot.
Rocky Lynx Waterproof Snake Boots offers you a camo snakeproof exterior fabric that protects you from getting bitten by the most venemous snakes in North America. The upper is made with 16 inches of Cordura® fabric that is covered in Mossy Oak Break-Up® camo. This fabric is rugged enough to be able to withstand tough conditions, but it’s also lightweight. On both the toe and heel, this Rocky Lynx boot offers abrasion protection.
When you’re walking in wet grass or fording water, Rocky waterproof construction keeps your legs and feet dry. The boots do not say Gortex waterproofing, but I can attest they certainly do keep your feet completely dry unless water comes in over the top of the boots. These lace-up boots also have a side zipper that allows you to get them on and off easily. Don’t worry about the zipper leaking, the water proof lining has built-in waterproof expansion flap beneath the zipper.
One of my top priorities in a boot is comfort. Rocky comfort comes from the Terra Suspension polyurethane footbed that also absorbs shock. An EVA midsole is impact-absorbing, compression molded, and extremely durable. The rubber Lynx outsole is great for all terrains. After you wear these boots for a short time, they feel as good as an old pair of sneakers.
I do not lace my snake boots tightly, but if you like your boots snugged up, the YKK side zipper really comes in handy. After you get your boots laced to your comfortable feel, you never have to worry about that again. The side zipper is fast and keeps you in your comfort zone.
I am an Amazon affiliate and have posted links to these boots. If you purchase them I may get a small commission. The boots reviewed in this post, Rocky Men’s Waterproof Hunting Boots Review, are my personal boots that I purchased before becoming an affiliate.

Rocky Outback Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiker Boot
The Rocky Outback Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiker Boot (made of Kangaroo Skin) is quickly becoming my favorite new pair Rocky hunting boots. They fit well, are lightweight and super comfortable. I looked at another Kangaroo skin boot but it was heavy and stiff. The Rocky Outback is soft with no break-in required even though they are waterproof full grain leather.
They remind me of the old green Browning Kangaroo skin hunting boots of the 1960’s and 70’s. They were light as a feather and tough as nails. The only place you may find those now is on Ebay.
This is a great boot with great traction. I would say these warm weather boots with a “sport utility outsole”. These lightweight boots give you stable footing and the full-grain leather upper is tough making it an great choice. If you need a more roomy design you can buy extra wide Rocky Boots. Compared to some boots like Irish Setter or LL Bean, these boots have a more affordable price.
The Rocky website has limited information, so added more information for the first time buyer. I think they are an excellent choice for a great price. Most of the boots reviews on Rocky’s website are positive; however, limited. They may not have as many popular women’s styles, but the men’s styles are almost unlimited.
Rocky Outback Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiker Boot has that same feel as the old Browning boots. The sole is a little more aggressive than the old Browning boot, but overall the boot is extremely comfortable, and has enough bite to get you up slippery hills or keep your footing in rocks. It is also rigid enough to prevent stone bruise and soft enough to feel your way along a trail. Rocky calls it the Terra Suspension Footbed. The bottom line is that you can wear these boots a long time and walk a lot of miles in comfort.
The boots have speed lacing which makes them quick to get off an on. Your foot just slides right in thanks to the smooth fully lined interior of the boot. The boot is not insulated, but it does have the genuine Gortex membrane to keep your feet completely dry if you encounter rain or wet grass during your hunt. As you know, dry feet means warmer feet in colder weather.
Overall I highly recommend the Rocky Outback Gore-Tex Waterproof Hiker Boot to hunters or anyone trekking the great outdoors. I am sure you will like them as much as I do and they won’t break the bank.

Rocky Insulated Waterproof Boots
Rocky Men’s Bearclaw 3D Insulated Hiking / Hunting Boot on sale at Amazon $187
Most of my hunting is done in warmer climates, but it is not uncommon for temps to drop into the teens. My current pair of Rocky Insulated boots is the BuckTrack with 600 grams of Thinsulate. If you live in colder climates, Rocky has insulated BearClaw boots with up to 1400 grams of Thinsulate insulation. Of course, all of the Rocky insulated hunting boots are waterproof to keep your feet dry.
When the temps drop below freezing, I reach for my Rocky Insulated boots. Nothing says comfort in the winter like Thinsulate insulation around your feet. Rocky insulated boots are made for years of service. I have had mine for about 5 years, and they are still as good as new. They take the mud and snow with no issues. They have never leaked or separated between footbed and sole.
Since the BearTrack is no longer available, I suggest you look at the Rocky BearClaw insulated hunting boot. It is available with 1000 or 1400 grams of Thinsulate to keep your feet warm even in extreme conditions. You can find the Spec’s and product description below.

For more comfort internally, you’ll be walking on the Air-Port Cushion Footbed. This is not your typical footbed; it is shock absorbing, supports and cushions, and promotes air to circulate each time you take a step. Your feet will be at ease throughout the entire hunting season.
On the bottom is the BearClaw 3D outsole with ROCKY 3D welt construction; it’s durable and allows you to walk across rough terrain with absolute ease. Get outdoors in these Rocky BearClaw 3D hunting boots.

Rocky Men’s Waterproof Hunting Boots Review
History of Rocky Boots
F.M. Brooks and his brother William Brooks established a new shoe factory during Great Depression in Nelsonville, Ohio. The two set up shop in a rent-free building with lent equipment, and the William Brooks Shoe Co. was born.
In 1946, F.M. left Nelsonville, but his son John remained to raise a family and help grow the factory. In the late 1950s, William sold the business to the Irving Drew Shoe Co. based in Lancaster, Ohio. Although disappointed over the sale of the business, John continued to work for the company under new ownership.
Footwear manufacturing in the U.S. languished throughout the 1960’s. Production facilities closed and eventually, the former William Brooks Shoe Co. Factory became outdated. By 1975, Irving Drew was ready to sell or shut down the factory.
John Brooks took the opportunity and bought the business back with his son Mike, who immediately moved back to Ohio from his job at a Milwaukee tannery. In search of a rugged, outdoorsy name, the Rocky brand was created in 1979.
Under the leadership of Mike Brooks, the company continued to grow throughout the 1980s. Following a successful SHOT show in 1984, Rocky shifted focus and expanded their efforts in hunting footwear, designing innovative boots like the Cornstalker. Soon, outdoor stores and retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cabela’s were selling Rocky products across the country.
Still headquartered in Nelsonville, Ohio and now run by Mike’s son Jason, with over a hundred employees.Rocky continues to be a world leader in premium quality Outdoor, Work, Western, Public Service and Military footwear. New boot styles, Outdoor and Work apparel and accessories have also been added.
