Prism Scopes For AR15’s & Carbines

Top 10 Best Prism Scopes For AR15’s & Carbines

Prism Scopes For AR15’s & Carbines by The Old Deer Hunters – Welcome to our search for a new Prism Scope for my AR15 rifle. We will explore and analyze the features of some popular prism sights, including SWAMPFOX, Vortex Optics, Primary Arms Optics, Monstrum Tactical, Athlon and Burris Optics.  The list includes 1X, 3X and 5X prism scopes or prism sights that are tailor-made for the AR15 Rifle.

My vision has changed in the last few years and I have developed an Astigmatism. I am no longer able to clearly see the dot in a red dot sight. When I look through a red dot sight, I see an elongated star instead of a dot. The best solution I have found is to use a prism sight because I can clearly see the illuminated etched reticle. There are also other notable features I think make the prism sight a better choice than a red dot for most shooting situations.

We hunt with AR15 type rifles year round for coyotes and hogs. Over the past year, we have researched and used several brands of prism scopes for hog hunting in daytime. Most of our hog hunting is done at night, but for daytime hog hunting, the prism scope is lightweight and fast for followup shots. We have found several brands and models that will get the job done and have listed them below. See our Youtube Channel, The Old Deer Hunters for video reviews.

What Is A Prism Scope

I would dare to say that most shooters do not know what a prism scope is. We have used red dot sights or conventional glass scopes all our lives. I for one did not know that there was another type of scope that may be better for certain target shooting, hunting situations or personal defense situations. That scope is the prism scope and here are a few reasons why;

Elimination of Astigmatism Issues
Available in 1X, 3X or 5X Magnification
Compact and Lightweight
Extremely Clear Image

Wide Field Of View
Reticle Is Etched, Still Usable Without Battery
Illuminated Reticles For Close Quarters Shooting

How Prism Scopes Work

A prism scope, also known as a prismatic scope, is a type of optical sight used on firearms that uses a prism to focus the image, rather than a series of lenses as found in traditional rifle scopes.

Light enters the scope through the objective lens. The light is then directed through the prism. The prism bends (refracts) and reflects the light multiple times within its surfaces, focusing the light to form a clear image. The shape and orientation of the prism ensure that the light path is compact, contributing to the scope’s shorter design compared to traditional scopes.

The reticle, which is etched onto the prism or an internal lens, is illuminated by an LED. This ensures that the reticle is visible even in low light. If the illumination system is off or the battery is dead, the etched reticle remains visible due to ambient light.

The focused light exits the prism and passes through the eyepiece, where the shooter views the magnified image of the target along with the reticle.

Prism Scope Features

Because a prism scope uses an etched reticle, shooters with Astigmatism can still see the reticle clearly. If you have trouble seeing a nice round aiming dot in a red dot sight, it is probably not the fault of the sight. I can see the reticle in all my conventional scopes very clearly, but not in a red dot sight. The etched reticle of a prism scope, however, is easy to see even if you suffer from Astigmatism.

Prism scopes are available is several fixed power magnifications. You can get a very compact 1X prism scope for close quarters shooting. The illuminated reticle is very clear and bright or you can use it without illumination if the battery dies. When looking for prism scopes for an AR-15 rifle, you can expect to find a scope with a clear image, bright illumination, and a wide field of view.

You can also choose a prism scope with 3X or 5X magnification as I did for hunting. I chose a 3X prism and Doug, my stepson, uses a 5X for our hunting needs. The magnified prism scopes have a much wider field of view than a conventional scope of the same power. A clear image and wide field of view are the two things I always look for in any scope.

After going through all the specifications of the prism scopes listed below, and examining many of them, I chose the Swampfox Trihawk 3X prism scope for my AR15 rifle. Doug went with the Vortex 5X model. He likes more magnification, but I had rather have the wider field of view of the 3X Swampfox. Everyone’s needs are different, so look through the list below to find the prism scope that will fit your needs. The Original ACOG

Trijicon 3×24 XB Compact ACOG $992 at Amazon

SWAMPFOX TRIHAWK 3X30 Prism Scope

SWAMPFOX TRIHAWK 3X30 Prism Scope, Red/Green Reticle, BDC/MOA $289 at Amazon

The SWAMPFOX TRIHAWK 3X30 is my personal favorite for a couple of reasons. It has an extremely large field of view for a 3X optic and it also has really good glass. You get to choose red or green illumination. Green illumination is always easier to see in bright sunlight. Also you have the option of a BDC reticle or an MOA reticle to suit your shooting needs. Not to mention capped turrets that are not available on some popular Prism optics. My pick from the Best Prism Scope (prism sights) For AR15’s & Carbines.

I really like shooting with the SWAMPFOX TRIHAWK. The chevron in the center of the reticle makes is easy to place shots on target at 200 yards. I first shot a reduced silhouette at 200 yards and then went to head shots (4″) supported off my bag. For up close and personal shots, the green illuminated reticle was about as fast as a red dot.

This prism sight is very clear and the field of view is huge. Eye relief is a little short so it might be an issue on a larger caliber like 308 Winchester, but it works fine for a 223/5.56mm. If you are used to shooting iron sights it will not be an issue. I normally shoot scopes with a longer eye relief, so I ordered a short picatinny rail extension to move it a little farther back. See photo below.

  • Prismatic scope with 3X magnification. All the benefits of a red dot plus the built in addition of 3X magnification and great anti-glare, anti-fog, anti-scratch, and hydrophobic glass
  • Uber long eye relief. This optic is 33% more forgiving of eye placement which facilitates rapid target acquisition. Coupled with Super wide (True 10 degree) field of view. Trihawk provides 53 ft of view at 100 yards as opposed to less that 36 ft for most of the competition.
  • Several great reticle choices. All are etched into the glass, so even with loss of battery they still work. 556 / 308 BDC or 40 MOA Ladder. Red or Green. All come with ten brightness settings. The other six are for those in betweens.
  • Shake ‘n Wake technology built in. The reticle powers down after 225 seconds of inactivity but instantly powers back on with any movement.
  • We use our products so Trihawk comes with everything you need, battery, mount, flip up caps, and a honeycomb anti-relfection device

Monstrum Low Profile Picatinny Rail Extension $20 at Amazon

Most Prism scopes have a short eye relief. If you want to set the scope back on an AR rifle, I recommend the Monstrum Shrapnel Offset Picatinny Riser Mount with Recoil Stop Base | 8 Slot 3.5 inch.

prism scopes for ar15

It moves the scope back about an inch so my head is in same position as when using a regular glass scope. There is still plenty of room to grab the charging handle. It works for me, so if you are having trouble seeing the whole field of view through your prism sight, here is a good solution.

Prism Scopes For AR15’s – Key Selection Factors for Prism Sights

One of the first things you should consider is what magnification you need for your shooting requirements.  Prism scopes typically are available in 1 X magnification to 5X magnification.  A 1 X Prism scope is essentially an improved red dot or improved holographic sight.  They work like a red dot, but have etched reticles so they can function without battery power.

They are also about the same as a fixed power traditional scope with illuminated reticle, making it ideal for an AR-15 rifle.  The $300 price point is affordable for most people and battery life is very good. Some prism scopes like the Aimpoint, Trijicon mro, Steiner t, and Aimpoint t were not reviewed because of cost factor.

Some prism scopes are very compact like the Vortex Spitfire 1 X microprism, some have moa dot or MOA reticles while others have BDC reticles.  Glass quality is good in all of the scopes in the list of 10 Prism Scopes For AR15’s & Carbines.

These prism scopes are not for long range shooting, but intended for close to medium distance shooting.  Longer ranges are doable but not great with the 5X models.  The best optic or best glass seems to be in the Swampfox Trihawk, a little better than the Primary Arms Slx.  Doug has a Vortex 5x prism scope and he likes it better than my 3X because of the extra magnification for hunting.

The Primary Arms models have the acss reticle, very good for close quarters or longer ranges.  None of them use fiber optics for illumination.  I think prismatic scopes are superior to the best red dot sight I have used and the 1 X prism sight is the best choice, a great choice over a red dot.  The 1 X models are better for close-range shooting and with 3X-5X prism scope you need no 2 X magnifier for longer range.

We did not test the Monstrum s, Sig Romeo 5, Sig Sauer Romeo 7, Sig Sauer Bravo.  The prism allows budget buyers a standard scope at a great price with adjustable diopter, good build quality, in the $300 price range.  Theses scopes will last a long time and are good quality and some high-quality optics.

Mounting options are many and you will find a sweet spot for eye relief easily.  Some prisms are micro prisms, and some are larger but all are pretty compact.  You should have a very good shooting experience with any ar-15 style rifle or other type of carbine.  I prefer the 3X optics (personal preference in middle ground) for versatility.

They are great for low light conditions using the illuminated horseshoe reticle.  I think they are as good as the best ar-15 red dots in similar price range. You will find and excellent scope with your favorite reticles with 1-5X magnification optics for about any shooting requirement.  5X is a lot of magnification so I recommend 1-3X scopes to replace a red dot optic but for long distances the 5X long-range optics will be best.
