Aluminum Center Post Tripod Legs $119 from AMAZON
Tripod legs for coyotes fall into two categories. Tripods with a center post, and tripods without a center post. Center post tripods are normally made of aluminum and are lower priced than tripods made of carbon fiber. The aluminum, center post tripods are usually priced from $100-150 and will provide you a good basic system without breaking the bank. Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting
The center post tripods have a weight limit of 15-25 pounds which will work for the average weight AR or Bolt Action rifle with a thermal or glass scope. We have a couple of those types of legs listed below that I have used extensively for hunting hogs and coyotes. They weigh a couple of more pounds and may not be quite as stable as a tripod with carbon fiber legs without a post, but they can help you put coyotes in the truck.
For stability, you want the center post tripods to be tall enough so you never have to use the center post for elevation when standing. When hunting coyotes at night, you will seldom sit down and 90% of your shots will be from the standing position.
- Hunting tripods should be as light as possible but able to support at least 15 pounds to make sure you have a steady rest.
- The Minimum work height should be 60″ without raising the center post. At night most shots are taken from standing position.
- An RRS Lever Clamp or similar lever clamp is essential to secure your rifle. (more about the clamp below)
The main advantage of aluminum, center post tripods is the lower price. The disadvantages are heavier weight and less stability.

Leofoto SO-282C 2-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod
Leofoto SO-282C 2-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod $343 Shop AMAZON
These inverted carbon fiber legs are quick to setup with only one adjustment cuff per leg. It is strong and will hold 55 lbs and only weighs 4 pounds. This tripod is better for hunting while standing because of the inverted leg style but limits lower shooting positions without opening the legs to a wider angle. These are the legs I am currently running on my tripod setup.
The Leofoto SO-322C 2-Section Inverted Carbon Fiber Tripod from Leofoto is an excellent choice for full-sized firearm combos that need rock-solid support for a full-length rifle chassis with a spotting scope. The robust 55 lb load capacity also makes it suitable for use with extreme spotting scopes, cameras, and large format surveillance equipment. My personal favorite of the Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting.
The carbon fiber legs are inverted, with the widest tube at the bottom, for added stability and to prevent mud and debris from entering. The twist-lock joints provide fast setup and breakdown. The legs have individual spread and three available locking positions, making it possible to achieve proper level even when on uneven terrain.
- Weight: 4 LBS
- Inverted Leg design for added stability
- Independent leg spread
- Three locking leg positions
- 10x layers of Toray carbon fiber
- CNC-Machined 6061-T6 aluminum apex spider
- Rubber feet with included steel spiked feet set

Vortex Optics Radian Carbon Tripod Kits
Vortex Optics Radian Carbon Tripod Kit $899 at Amazon
Vortex Optics Radian Tripod Heads (Ball Head) $299 at Amazon
Vortex Optics Radian Tripod Heads (Leveling Head) $155 at Amazon
The Vortex Radian Carbon Tripod Kit has everything together with strong 55lb capacity tripod legs, a Vortex Ball Head and ARCA clamp. Or buy separately.
It appears to be almost identical to the Leofoto tripod and Desmond D-Low 55 Ball Head. I have not used one of these but one of my buddies in Texas has this setup and really likes it. My personal tripods are Leofoto and Desmond D-Low 55 ball head.
Like the Leofoto, the tripod has an apex at the top with a bowl so you can also run a leveling head as have a quick change option so it is easy to switch from a leveling head to a ball head. I recommend changing the ARCA clamp to a lever clamp (see below). Vortex will always be easy to work with if you need repair or warranty service.
- There’s no way something this precise should be this tough, but the Radian Carbon Tripod Kit with a Ball Head changes the rules when it comes to getting the utmost finesse out of a rock-solid platform.
- Fully carbon fiber legs and aluminum construction make for an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, supporting a 55 lb. max load while keeping the kit easy to pack.
- Along with great strength, you get great precision with an integrated level; perfect for large binos, spotting scopes or as a rifle stand. Interchangeable rubber & spiked feet, 3-angle leg pivot locks, and a detachable counterweight provide stability.
- Ball Head offers independent pan movement and tension control with an integrated level, 45° of tilt, and notches for up to 90°. Great for shooting/glassing at high/low angles, it allows greater elevation adjustment and the ability to level but still pan.
- Swap out all your long-range tools quickly with the features you need, including Arca-Swiss compatibility and quick release. Whether you’re calling shots, or looking for a solid base for your rifle, the Radian Carbon makes sure you’re ready.

If you are on a budget I would seriously look at this tripod. It has all the features of more expensive tripods and cost hundreds less. It is made in China where most tripod legs are made. I would pair this with a Desmond D-Low55 for a steady shooting platform and buy more ammo with the savings. 32mm tube is comfortable to grip when you are on the move. Ball Heads For Hunting Tripod Setups
A ball head for hunting needs a ball size of 40mm or larger depending on the weight of your rifle. We use and recommend the Really Right Stuff (RSS) BH55 (55mm ball) ball head or the Desmond DLow-55 ball head. They are very similar. I think the DLow-55 is just a clone of the RRS BH55.
RSS BH-55 Ball Head & Lever-Release Clamp
RSS BH-55 Ball Head & Lever-Release Clamp $560 at Amazon
Really Right Stuff BH55 is a 1.96 lb ball head that will support loads weighing up to 50 lb. Crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, the BH-55 has all of the features you’d expect from a professional-level head. An over-sized, ergonomic locking knob allows 45-degree tilting in all directions and dual 90-degree drop-notches facilitate quick and accurate switching from the horizontal landscape position to vertical portrait orientation. A separate tension knob is provided to apply the appropriate pressure that safely corresponds to the weight of your rifle. A third knob loosens and locks the panning base which is laser-engraved with markers every 2.5 degrees from 0 to 360 degrees.
Really Right Stuff components are made in America so you get superior quality at a little higher price. There are many brands like Desmond, Leofoto and Vortex that are very good quality and cost less because they are made in China. You decide whether the lesser quality is good enough for your use, or if you want to invest in American made products.
Desmond DLOW-55 Low-Profile Ball Head
Desmond DLOW-55 Low-Profile Ball Head $149 at Amazon
Made with a low center of gravity for easy movement. The adjustable tension on the 55mm ball reduces the possibility of the mounted rifle from moving when locked. This low-profile head is only 3.9″ tall but boasts an impressive 77 lb load capacity. It features dual portrait angle selector notches to make easier to position heavy loads and tension adjustment to offset the weight load.
The base of the DLOW-55 has a 3/8″-16 threaded tripod socket, and the included 3/8″-16 to 1/4″-20 reducer bushing makes it possible to mount the head on almost any tripod leg set. A 60mm Arca-type quick release plate and zippered storage case are included.

Artcise 54mm Ball Head
Artcise 54mm Ball Head $97 at Amazon
The Artcise 54m Ball Head has all the features of higher priced ball heads, plus you will have money left over to invest in a quality lever clamp. I think this is a perfect addition to the new shooters tool kit for hog or coyote hunting, but I would recommend a lever clamp. This ball head is made in China and will work great for the average hunter, but the little screw clamp on top leaves a little to be desired.

Tripod Leveling Bases For Coyote Hunting
The leveling base is becoming more popular for hunting because it is lighter weight than a ball head and gives you almost as much maneuverability. It has about 30 degrees of vertical up or down movement, but that is plenty for coyote or deer hunting on level or rolling terrain.
Most leveling bases have a locking/unlocking collar ring that you loosen, move the rifle and lock into shooting position. A second type of leveling base uses a joystick control that extends through the apex of the tripod. The joystick leveling base is used with Leofoto, Vortex and FatBoy Tripod legs. More on the joystick base below.
An ARCA-Swiss or Picatinny clamp is used to hold the rifle. You can also use a leveling base with Saddle clamp or a Grip. Grips are normally used for rifles that do not have ARCA-Swiss rails or mounts on the bottom of the rifle.
The Video above show the Leofoto leveling base and how it attaches to the rifle with an ARCA mount.
Really Right Stuff TA-2U-LB Leveling Base
Really Right Stuff TA-2U-LB Leveling Base with Lever-Release Clamp $380
The RRS Leveling base screws down onto the 3/8″ stud at the top of your tripod legs. The base uses a butter fly ring (see silver ring in image above) to release or tighten the base to move your rifle (up to 40 degrees of movement). It also comes with lever clamp included. The RRS SOAR clamp will accept an ARCA type or Piccatinni mount.
This base is compatible with series 2 tripods and installs on tripods with 3/8″-16 male and female threads. The leveler, which has a built-in bubble level, has 40° of adjustment, and it levels out your tripod on uneven ground or on terrain with steep angles without the need of adjusting the legs. The Arca-type clamp with lever release comes pre-installed, and it accepts Really Right Stuff plates and L-brackets as well as other third-party brands. The leveler can support a load capacity of 25 lb, and it locks at the required angle with ease by turning the triple-lobe locking mechanism.

Joystick Leveling Base For Coyote Hunting
The Joystick leveling base is used with tripod legs that have an bowl Apex at the top with a hole in the bottom. That bowl allows a matching leveling base to be set down into it and a joystick control goes through the hole.
The shooter uses the off hand to turn the knob at the bottom of the joystick to unlock and tilt the leveling head then tighten it back to hold the rifle in position to make a shot.
To use a ball head with this type tripod, a base with a stud in the center replaces the leveling base. This type of leveling base is available from Vortex, FatBoy, Leofoto and other tripod manufactures.
I tried one of the joystick leveling bases and found that it works well but I preferred a ball head.

Saddle Clamps for Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting
If you do not have an ARCA-Swiss rail on the bottom of your rifle, a Grip (or Saddle Clamp) can be used to hold the rifle. Grips are not as secure as the other mounts but are necessary when you do not have a rail on the bottom of your rifle. The grip can be mounted directly to the tripod, or it can be used on top of a ball head. Using the grip with the ball head gives you much more freedom of movement. Coyotes seldom stand still and you will be tracking them continuously after they are spotted.
One reason for not using a grip mount is that a grip does not secure your rifle as well to the tripod. It only holds the rifle tight enough to shoot from or hold the rifle balanced on top of the tripod to free your hands when calling or scanning for game. If you use a ball head and an ARCA mount on your rifle, you can pick up the tripod with rifle attached when you have to move. Do not trust a grip mount to hold your rifle while on the move.
SunwayFoto SM-76 Grip (see above) $59 at AMAZON
Leofoto LB-75 75mm Leveling Base for Tripod $79 at AMAZON
Since I have rifles with and without ARCA-Swiss mounts, I use a grip for my wood stocked rifles when I hunt deer from a blind. I have an ARCA-Swiss mount attached to the bottom of the Grip. The ARCA plate on bottom of the grip is used to attach the grip to the ball head. With this setup, I do not have to remove my ball head to use my Grip, but more importantly, I have freedom of movement in any direction.
Mounting a Grip directly to a tripod restricts movement and is not the best option when hunting moving targets like coyotes.

For example, the B2-LR II will mount will not fit a Desmond or Leofoto Ball Head without the Rosette style adapter.
The RRS B2-LR II QR Clamp will still screw down onto any plate or tripod with a 3/16″ stud.
Leofoto QR Lever Release Clamp
LEOFOTO LR-70 Lever Release Clamp, 70mm $79 at Amazon
Leofoto makes a LR70 QR Lever Release Clamp that works well also. It will fit any brand of ball head other than a RRS ball head. I am using one on my Leveling base and it works very well. It will also fit any tripod or mounting plate with a 3/16″ stud. Best value clamp of the Best Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting 2024.
ARCA-Swiss Rifle Mounts
ARCA RAIL Mount for AR15 or Rifles With MLok Hand Guard
The ARCA Rail fits on the bottom of the hand guard of an AR type rifle or other rifle with MLok hand guard or chassis. The Clamp on top of the ball head clamps onto the ARCA Rail.
Attaching the mount to your rifle is very simple if you are running an MLok rail on your AR style rifle, or bolt action rifle with an chassis instead of a standard stock. I have also mounted ARCA-Swiss mounts to the bottom of a composite stocks on rifles like the Tikka T3.

Difference Between a Ball Head and Leveling Base
When it comes to supporting hunting rifles, both ball heads and leveling bases are popular options, but they serve slightly different purposes.
- Ball Head: A ball head is a type of tripod head that provides a versatile and flexible platform for supporting a hunting rifle. It consists of a ball-shaped joint mounted on top of a tripod. The ball head allows smooth and precise movement in multiple axes, including rotation, tilt, and panning. It typically has a single locking knob that controls the ball’s movement and allows quick adjustments to the rifle’s position.
Advantages of a Ball Head:
- Quick and easy adjustments: The ball head’s design enables rapid changes to the rifle’s orientation, making it suitable for situations where you need to react swiftly.
- Versatility: The ball head offers freedom of movement in multiple directions, allowing you to track moving targets or adjust your shooting angle effortlessly.
- Compact and lightweight: Ball heads are generally compact and lightweight, making them portable and suitable for hunters who need to move frequently.
- Leveling Base: A leveling base, also known as a leveling head or leveling platform, is designed to provide a stable and level surface for mounting a hunting rifle. It usually consists of a flat platform that sits between the tripod or monopod and the rifle. The leveling base is equipped with adjustable leveling screws or a ball-and-socket mechanism to ensure that the platform is perfectly level.
Advantages of a Leveling Base:
- Stability and accuracy: Leveling bases excel at providing a stable shooting platform by ensuring that the rifle is perfectly level. This helps minimize any potential errors caused by uneven terrain or an unbalanced setup.
- Precise adjustments: The leveling screws or ball-and-socket mechanism allow fine adjustments to align the rifle precisely. This can be particularly beneficial when shooting over long distances or when using high-magnification scopes. Vertical movement limited to +-15 degrees.
- Increased load capacity: Leveling bases are generally built to handle heavier loads compared to ball heads, making them suitable for larger rifles or setups involving additional accessories like spotting scopes. Best Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting 2024
- Lighter weight than a ball head.
In summary, a ball head offers flexibility, quick adjustments, and portability, while a leveling base provides stability, precise leveling, and increased load capacity. The choice between the two depends on your specific hunting requirements, shooting style, and the terrain you typically encounter.
What We Are NOT Talking About
Today I am not talking about shooting sticks with three legs like a Trigger Stick or Bog Pod. I am not being critical of those products, I am just saying that there are much better options for Hunting Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting.
When hunting coyotes at night, you need a tripod system that you can lock your rifle onto while you are running the electronic call and scanning the area with your thermal monocular. Obviously, shooting sticks or bipods will not do the job.
You also need a steady platform from which to shoot and smooth tracking capability on moving targets. The first shot is a lot easier than the second or third when coyotes and hogs are trying to escape.
Our goal is to help you assemble a tripod system that will help you be more confident and successful at night. There is also another benefit to a good, heavy duty tripod system. A good system will make your hunts more enjoyable.
The nay-Sayers will always tell you they can do just as well without the better gear. But trying to make a 200+ yard shot on a coyote on a set of shooting sticks or flimsy tripod is a tall order. Making the same shot with a rock-solid shooting platform is much easier. If you have spent $3-10K on a thermal and rifle, don’t skimp on the tripod system. If you are a beginner, put your hard earned money into the correct components for a good system that will save you money in the long run.
Best Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting 2024 – Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs – No Center Post
Best Tripod Setups For Coyote Hunting 2024 have no Center Post
Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs usually do not have a center post. They usually have an apex (yoke) at the top with a 75mm or larger opening to accept a mounting platform for a screw-on ball head, or bowl to accept a half ball leveling base. They are usually lighter weight, but are more expensive. Carbon Fiber legs can support more weight and form a more stable platform.
Prices for good to best quality carbon fiber tripod legs run from about $450-1200, but you can catch some really good sales on them from time to time. Yes, they are expensive, but the added stability over a center post tripod will probably improve your hits past 150 yards by 50%.
Tripods have 2-5 telescoping legs sections using levers or twist grips to lock the legs in position. The leg angle is also adjustable to let them be lowered even more. Some can be lowered enough for shooting from the prone position.
The larger, outer leg section is usually at the top with multiple smaller leg sections that slide up into each other from the bottom. This multi-leg style is compact for storage, gives you more height adjustments and lets you shoot from lower positions.
Inverted tripod legs have only 2 sections and the outer section is located at the bottom and slides up over the top leg section. This type of tripod is a bit lighter, faster to setup and very good for shooting from the standing position. It is less compact for storage and does not have the adjustability of legs with 3-4 sections for shooting from lower positions.
We run both types, but I am currently running Inverted legs because all my hunting is from standing position. I don’t think one is better than the other for coyote hunting at night, it just depends on how you hunt.

The Thrill of the Night: Why Coyote Hunting with Thermal or Night Vision Scopes is a Blast
For some, the thought of venturing out into the darkness to hunt coyotes might conjur images of discomfort, danger, and limited visibility. However, for a growing number of hunters, the thrill of the night hunt, especially with the aid of thermal or night vision optics, offers an unparalleled experience that surpasses the excitement of daytime hunts.
The Advantages of Night Hunting:
- Increased Coyote Activity: Coyotes are primarily nocturnal creatures, meaning they are much more active at night. This translates into a much higher chance of encountering and successfully hunting them.
- Reduced Competition: Daytime hunting often sees competition from other hunters, but night hunting provides a more solitary and peaceful experience.
- Enhanced Detection: Thermal and night vision scopes allow you to see coyotes that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. This eliminates the need for moonlight or other light sources, making it possible to hunt even on cloudy nights.
- Unpredictable Challenge: Night hunting requires a different set of skills and strategies compared to daytime hunting. This adds an element of challenge and excitement to the experience.
The Exhilaration of the Hunt:
There’s something truly exhilarating about stalking coyotes in the darkness. The heightened senses, the anticipation of each rustle in the bushes, and the adrenaline rush of taking a shot at a target that you can barely see contribute to an unparalleled thrill. thermal scope vs. a night vision scope
Night vision scopes, on the other hand, require some ambient light to function. They can be less effective on cloudy nights or in dense cover. However, they are much more affordable than thermal scopes and provide good image quality in low-light conditions.

It’s crucial to remember that ethical hunting practices are essential for any type of hunting, especially at night. Make sure to follow all local regulations, use appropriate ammunition, and practice responsible shot placement. Additionally, consider the impact of your actions on the environment and the coyote population.
